When the ice road closes

Eight browser games in the dry
for weeks the ore train sits on the siding

Every spring at break-up the lake ice turns soft, the ice road shuts and the ore train waits on the siding until the ground firms up again. Rumbold spends those weeks in the dry, the miners' changehouse where wet overalls hang from chains, with a battered laptop and eight free browser games: a space economy run by players, a lane of trading sectors, two medieval war realms, pirate seas, a farm estate and two team desks. None of them asks the laptop for more than a tab.

Prosperous Universe

An economy run by players · Space & sci-fi

A miner understands this one at a glance: nothing exists until somebody digs it up and makes it. Good for
Anyone who likes the idea of an economy with no shopkeeper but the players.

  • Desktop browser
Best fit & opening moves

Good for: Short-shift players who still like a fight for the top.

Your first session
  1. Spend your first Action Points learning a short trade route.

Vikings: War of Clans key artStrategy & war

Vikings: War of Clans

Clan wars of the Norse

Raise a Norse stronghold, push your troops up through their tiers and spend skill points on a Jarl along a tree. Marches leave to gather from map tiles or hit rivals, and when whole clans clash, the ground they fight over is the Place of Power with its bonuses for an entire kingdom.

  • Several short visits through the day
  • Desktop browser; mobile app also available
Best fit & opening moves

Good for: Anyone after a clan war that runs for months.

Your first session
  1. Keep your stronghold upgrades running at all times.

Countryside farm estate

  • Ten tidy minutes or a whole evening of building
  • Desktop browser
Best fit & opening moves

Good for: Players who like calm, cheerful sims.

Your first session
  1. Plant the quick crops first to keep the estate moving.

Hattrick key artSport & management

Hattrick

Football management, for years

Hattrick keeps a weekly beat: the training focus you pick raises one particular skill for every player in the squad, so patience pays. Players change hands in one market shared by every manager, where you place your bids, set tactics and individual match orders, then follow the result in the live match viewer.

  • A few visits a week around match days
  • Desktop browser; mobile app also available
Best fit & opening moves

Good for: Managers hungry for detail and a living transfer market.

Your first session
  1. Stick with one training focus for a few weeks running.
  2. Study the transfer market before your first bid.
  3. Set individual orders for your key players.

  • One live race, plus short visits for development
  • Desktop browser; mobile app also available

Cost for all 8: free to join, with optional extras sold inside each game.

01

Nothing to pay at the changehouse door

None of the eight charges a fee to join, and months of play stay open without spending a cent; the exchange, the sectors, the realms, the seas, the farm and both team desks all arrive complete.

Somewhere in each game sits a shop of speed-ups and cosmetic extras, and opening it is never required. Plenty of seasoned players ignore it entirely, and a computer shared by the whole camp can usually be given a spending limit from the account page.

02

Your first week of break-up

Press a game's button and the studio behind it opens in a fresh tab, on its own official site. Make an account there using your email, and soon a trading base, a ship, a stronghold, a farm, a squad or a race team carries the name you chose.

All eight walk newcomers through an opening tutorial. Keep going until it lets you go: menus and markets are introduced one at a time, much as Rumbold leads a new hand down each drift before letting them work it alone.

03

Short shifts and long ones

Not one of the eight stops when the tab closes: production keeps running, marches keep going, crops ripen and the season moves on. Look in before breakfast, look again after supper, and everything holds its course.

Quick looks are for gathering, lining up builds and answering allies. Leave the heavy decisions, a fresh production chain, a guild siege or a new race strategy, for a full evening in the dry.

04

Keep your login under lock like the lamp room

Your login for each game belongs to that game's studio, so type it nowhere except that studio's genuine address. Rumbold carries a different key for every locker in the dry; a different password for every game follows the same logic, and where a game offers a code sent to your phone at login, accept it.

No real member of staff will ask for your password. If a message offers in-game gems or gold for your login details, the sender is after the account; leave it unanswered and report it.

How these eight earned a peg in the dry

  • All eight load in a plain computer browser, so a slow week underground starts the moment the laptop lid is up.
  • Joining is free across the board, and someone who leaves every in-game shop shut still gets to the heart of each game.
  • The range is wide: production chains among the stars, a sector-by-sector trading lane, Norse clans, medieval nations, pirate ships, a farm, a football club and a race team.
  • Real people sit on the other side of every server, so the guilds, clans, alliances, leagues and markets all have somebody to answer.

Nothing at all. Every game here runs inside a computer browser; Khan Wars, Vikings: War of Clans, Hattrick and iGP Manager also have an official phone app, purely optional.

No. All eight take new players for nothing and keep the whole game open to them unpaid; any money spent inside one is a decision for you alone.

No. Rumbold only keeps the bookmarks. Separate studios built these games and still run them, and each button here takes you out of the mine to that studio's own front door.

No. Eight studios means eight sign-ups, each with its own email check and password, and every one of them free.

Khan Wars, Vikings: War of Clans, Hattrick and iGP Manager each have an official phone app alongside the browser version. Prosperous Universe, Pardus, Seafight and Big Farm are browser-only and most comfortable on a laptop or desktop screen.

Pardus, where one spend of Action Points is the whole visit, or Big Farm, which goes as slowly as you like. Prosperous Universe, Khan Wars and Hattrick reward patience over weeks.

Yes. Prosperous Universe has its player-set exchange, Pardus and Khan Wars have alliances and guilds, Vikings: War of Clans has clans, Seafight has rival captains, Big Farm has cooperative play, and Hattrick and iGP Manager have leagues of other managers.
